Location: U.S. Coast Guard Aviation Logistics Center (ALC) – Information Systems Division (ISD) 
Clearance Requirement: Favorable Tier 1 (Public Trust for unclassified systems) 

 

Position Overview: 

The Technical Writer – Senior is responsible for producing high-quality documentation that contributes to the overall success of IT and software development projects. This role involves creating, editing, and managing a wide variety of technical materials including equipment manuals, software documentation, operating procedures, business proposals, presentations, and regulatory deliverables. The Technical Writer collaborates closely with engineers, developers, operations personnel, and subject matter experts to ensure all documentation is clear, accurate, compliant, and user-focused. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation including user manuals, functional descriptions, system specifications, and standard operating procedures. 

  • Prepare project documentation deliverables such as reports, briefings, business proposals, and presentations to meet contract and task order requirements. 

  • Define and manage the content strategy and information architecture for project documentation. 

  • Draft outlines and content for review and approval by SMEs and project management; finalize documents for submission in accordance with applicable guidelines and regulations. 

  • Conduct research and gather background technical data to support accurate documentation of project requirements and system functionality. 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to create visual aids such as diagrams, process flows, screenshots, and videos to supplement technical materials. 

  • Ensure consistency in style, terminology, formatting, and structure across all documentation products. 

  • Consult source materials including technical references, regulatory policies, and system specifications to verify the accuracy and relevance of content. 

  • Support Agile development teams with timely updates to documentation as systems evolve through iterative sprints and releases.

Requirements

Minimum Education and Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Computer Science, Math, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field; or an IT Certification. 
    (Two years of relevant experience may substitute for one year of education.) 

 

Required Experience and Skills: 

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in software engineering, including designing, coding, testing, and documenting computer programs. 

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an Agile DevSecOps software and engineering environment. 

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience using collaboration tools such as Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket (or equivalent). 

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated attention to detail and the ability to explain complex concepts to a variety of audiences. 

  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, meet tight deadlines, and adapt quickly in a fast-paced technical environment. 

  • Must be able to obtain a favorable Tier 1 background check for work on unclassified systems.
