JOB DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking a Technical Writer to coordinate with the technical illustrator and senior technical writer is responsible for the development and internal submission of customer technical manuals for mass transit rail vehicles. The Technical Writer may also assist in the development of training materials as necessary.   

 

The primary responsibility of this position is to produce customer technical manuals in accordance with customer requirements and the development schedule, as agreed upon with the Manager and Team Lead of the Technical Publications department.  The customer technical manuals include, but are not limited to, Maintenance Allocation Charts, Running Maintenance Manuals, Heavy Repair Manuals, Special Tools and Test Equipment Manuals, and Service Bulletins (SBUs).

 

Essential Functions

  1. Develop maintenance manuals for new project to contract requirements.  This includes developing all tasks required by the maintainability analysis developed by engineering.  This includes developing the proper test procedures, preventive maintenance procedures, corrective maintenance procedures, etc.
  2. Develop Special Tools and Test Equipment (ST&TE) manuals to contract requirements.  This includes developing manuals that include the description, safety requirements, operation, maintenance, and bill of material for the ST&TE.
  3. Review applicable Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), Field Modification Instruction (FMIs), Field Problem Resolutions (FPRs), and Request for Engineering Changes (RECs) to determine the effect on previously published manuals.  Revise manuals for projects under warranty and develop SBUs for out-of-warranty projects.
  4. Coordinate illustration development with the Technical Illustrator(s) to ensure illustrations are completed per the schedule and in the required format.

 

Technical competencies

        Mechanical principles understanding 
        Hydraulic principles understanding 
        Pneumatic principles understanding 
        Electrical/electronics understanding
2. Computer/Writing Experience - Proficent
        Knowledge of manuals development processes
        Broad base of experience in word processing programs, including Microsoft Word and Adobe FrameMaker
        Experience with other software programs (PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, Excel, XML, Adobe Acrobat)

3. Effective written communication skills
        Strong proofreading and editing skills
        Ability to learn new software programs

 

Education

Bachelors Degree

Will consider extensive relevant technical experience in training or field work in lieu of formal education

 

Experience

3-5+ years of relevant experienceLI-TS
