Position Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and security-conscious Technical Writer. In this role, you will develop and manage complex technical documentation for defense systems, software, hardware, and processes. You will collaborate with engineers, analysts, and program managers to ensure content is accurate, compliant with DoD standards (e.g., MIL-STD, DoD 5000 series), and accessible to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, edit, and maintain a variety of documentation, including user manuals, system operation procedures, interface control documents (ICDs), test plans, SOPs, and training materials.
- Translate complex engineering concepts, cybersecurity protocols, and defense systems into clear, accurate, and user-friendly documentation.
- Ensure documentation complies with DoD documentation standards, including MIL-STD-40051, MIL-HDBK-1222, and style guides such as ASD-STE100.
- Work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather and verify technical content.
- Manage version control and document configuration using tools like Microsoft SharePoint, Confluence, and DoD-specific CMS platforms.
- Participate in technical meetings, project reviews, and audits as needed to gather context and feedback.
- Maintain information security and operational security (OPSEC) compliance in all documentation practices.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Communication, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
- 3–7 years of experience in technical writing, preferably supporting DoD or government contracts.
- Strong knowledge of DoD terminology, technical documentation processes, and defense acquisition documentation.
- Proficiency with documentation tools (Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office Suite, XML-based editors, Adobe FrameMaker).
- Ability to interpret and write content from engineering drawings, design specifications, and software documentation.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with STIGs, DISA documentation, or cybersecurity frameworks.
- Experience with S1000D, SCORM, or IETM development.
- Knowledge of Agile methodologies or experience with integrated product teams (IPTs).
